Eating Disorders: ‘An outward expression of inward pain’

Eating disorders are a serious mental illness, with devastating consequences but help is available, says New Life Counselling.

With more than 1.6million people affected by eating disorders in the U.K, local counselling organisation New Life Counselling has urged those affected to reach out for help.

This week (21st-28th February) is Eating Disorders Awareness Week and New Life Counselling is appealing for anyone worried about an eating disorder to seek advice and support.

Eating disorders, together with their many physical and psychological complications, are a significant cause of ill health. Often misunderstood as an illness which only affects young women, eating disorders can develop regardless of age, sex or cultural background.

Conditions such as anorexia, bulimia and binge eating are complex illnesses and can lead to depression, anxiety, low self-esteem as well as physical illness. However, research shows that effective counselling can help people to cope with eating disorders and overcome these challenging illnesses.

Professional counselling services are available for local people affected by eating disorders and other mental illnesses at New Life Counselling’s offices in Ardoyne and Duncairn Gardens.

Dr Fran Renwick, Development Manager at New Life Counselling said: “Eating disorders are sometimes difficult to understand. They are not only about attitudes to food but can be the result of a complex set of factors including stress, low mood, traumatic events or simply the need to regain control. It is important to act fast if you or anyone you know is struggling as the result of an eating disorder as the earlier treatment begins; the more likely it is that a full recovery can be achieved.

“New Life Counselling provides professional, confidential counselling. Our expert counselors are available to listen, to provide advice and to help people learn new ways to deal with difficult thoughts and feelings. People often struggle with eating disorders in secret and it is not always obvious if someone is suffering but it is important to seek help as soon as possible.”

If you or someone you know is suffering from an eating disorder or mental ill-health you can contact New Life Counselling direct or speak to your GP for a referral.
